This dish is also known as the classic Sicilian dish caponata. It is a result of the Spanish and Arab influence on Sicilian food. Eggplant, originally from India, was introduced by the Arabs. It became an aristocratic dish, served with fish such as cod and tuna. Although delicious with fish, it is most commonly served in taverns and tapas bars with toasted bread.
