This is another Lent staple. It also tends to be popular with people who don’t eat spicy food – although in Tegaru, those are few and far between.


  • 200 g (7 oz) yellow split peas
  • 1 onion, finely diced


Wash the yellow split peas until the water runs clear, then drain and leave to the side.

In a saucepan, sauté the onion in a little oil over medium heat until translucent.
