When I had been in Australia for long enough to start asking Mum to buy things I hadn’t seen before, I asked her to buy some mushrooms because I had eaten them on a pizza and wanted to try them at home. My mum couldn’t understand the appeal of a weed that grows wild and people eat when they have nothing else and the crops have failed. The concept of paying for mushrooms continues to amuse her.
