In Ukrainian, chereshnyanyk is the name for a pastry with a cherry filling. I use my recipe for Sour Cream Pastry Dough to make a sweet pastry base for this dish, reserving some dough to make a lattice top. In a pinch, if fresh sour cherries are not available, drained good-quality canned cherries can be used instead.
