  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla or
  • Grated rind of ½ lemon


Cream the butter, add the sugar gradually, then the egg, and beat well. Add the water and let this stand while the flour and baking powder are sifted three times. Beat all together thoroughly and bake in a moderate oven. This may be used as a loaf or as a layer cake with any preferred filling.
