  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 cup cold, boiled coffee
  • cups flour
  • 5 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon each cloves, mace and allspice
  • ¾ cup each currants and raisins, seeded and cut in pieces
  • ¼ cup citron, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons brandy


Cream butter and sugar, add eggs, one at a time; the molasses and the flour, fruit, spices and baking powder, mixed and stirred alternately into the mixture with the cold coffee, then add the brandy and bake in brick loaf pans gently, in a rather slow fire, until well baked.
