Wipe and core sour apples. Place them in an earthen dish and fill the center of each apple with sugar. Measure 1 tablespoon of water for each apple and pour it around the apples. Bake in a hot oven until soft, but not until broken—20 to 30 minutes. Serve with milk or cream.
