  • 8 qts. blackberries, (Lawtons)
  • 2 quarts cold water
  • 4 lbs. sugar
  • 1 tablespoon each, whole allspice, cloves, and cinnamon bark
  • 2 qts. whiskey or brandy


Tie spices in a thin bag. Pick over, wash the berries. Place in preserving kettle, cover with the water, let boil thoroughly soft; then strain well. Measure and to each quart of juice add 2 cups sugar (1 lb.). Add spice bag and boil about 20 minutes or until thick. Let cool and measure again. To each quart of syrup, add 1 pint of whiskey. Bottle and cork tightly. Will keep for years, the older, the better.
