Pomare celebrates the line of Tahitian monarchs who took over from the prior Teva dynasty of chiefs at the time of European discoveries in Polynesia. Pomare I, previously only a local chief, seized ascendancy by force of European arms, supplied to him in return for large quantities of pigs for the salt-pork trade with Australia.
