The first impression I got from the emu I encountered in semi-captivity within an animal park in Australia was hostility. A wire fence separated us, and I was glad for the barrier. The animal stalked over to me, fixed me with a beady eye (they do not stereoscopically see) opened its powerful beak and exhaled forcibly and rather foully in my face.
