Sue still refers to the kindergarten cookbook to make her mother’s caramel sauce recipe, which Jean served with home-made ice cream. ‘You can’t beat that caramel sauce,’ says Sue. ‘Mum was a very good cook. We grew up on meat and three veg, but she was a great cake cook and she made everything from scratch, even ice cream.’
