This cake recipe was published during the 1940s, in the twentieth edition of the Green and Gold Cookery Book, with a note that it was a favourite of Queen Mary, the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Apparently, a housekeeper from Windsor Castle dropped into the Anne Page Cake Shop near the castle one day, and asked for the baked delight, which Queen Mary described as the nicest chocolate cake she had ever eaten.
