My first husband, growing up before the second world war in suburban Johannesburg, used to get a penny for his Saturday pocket money and almost invariably spent it, after a mile-and-a-half walk, on a single meringue. He used to complain of the smallness and lack of whipped cream that his penny bought, but nevertheless, he could not resist. So here is a monster meringue with attitude. It’s even better, of course, with cream.
