An icon of Hong Kong, sampans were a popular form of transport in the 1950s. The boats were homes to the Tanka people and were also a hub of trade and for serving dishes like sampan congee, prepared with freshly caught seafood. They were docked in coves around Hong Kong, especially in Aberdeen, a fishing port on the southern part of Hong Kong Island that once hosted a large floating village, as well as the iconic JUMBO Seafood Restaurant, which, unfortunately, did not survive the pandemic.
