Western Toast

One of the most popular cha chaan teng snack items is Hong Kong French toast, or “Western toast,” which was originally enjoyed by Hongkongers during tea time but is now popular at any time of day. It is said to have originated in the 1950s at an iconic street stall, Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園, in Central, Hong Kong’s business district. The dish’s Western counterpart, made with milk and syrup (which were luxury ingredients at the time), was affordable mainly to Westerners. In order to cut costs and m
