Winter solstice, or doong ji 冬至, is not an official holiday, but it is observed by many Chinese communities. It recognizes the shortest day of the year, which is usually around December 21, marking the end of harvest and a time to start preparing for the colder months ahead. These glutinous rice dumplings are also enjoyed during the Lantern Festival (the last day of Lunar New Year), on wedding days, and at family reunions. Their round shape symbolizes fullness and unity.
