As a result of a shopkeeper’s unsellable broken eggs, Hong Kong gained one of its most popular and iconic snacks in the 1950s. Rather than throwing away this perishable shipment, the owner made a batter and poured it into a honeycomb-shaped cast-iron mold that he had on hand, and the rest is history.
