Khatti daal is a staple daal from Hyderabad and gets its name because of the sour taste of tamarind in it. However, this recipe is Ammi’s version of what we call khatti daal. The taste isn’t as sharp as the Hyderabadi khatti daal because this recipe uses tomatoes instead of tamarind.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Masoor Daal
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • ½

Method

Soak daal for half an hour or more.

Cook daal in 4 cups of water with salt, garlic, turmeric and red chilli powder.

When it boils, lower the heat and cover with the lid slightly open. When daal is half done, add tomatoes.
