My only visit to Georgia was in bleak mid-winter a few years ago. Tbilisi was full of refugees from fighting in the Black Sea provinces. It was bitterly cold, the economy was on the point of collapse and there was a fuel crisis. Electricity was on only a few hours a day and shops had their own tiny generators. People wore several layers of clothing and remained resolutely cheerful, helpful, proud of their country and their beautiful city and determined that a foreigner should experience it
