This super-rich cake is typical of many confections found on the European continent and is pure melt-in-the-mouth indulgence. Using hazelnut powder instead of flour gives the sponge its richness; but if you can’t find hazelnut powder, then roast whole hazelnuts in the oven, leave them to cool then blitz in a blender. If you prefer, this heavenly chocolate cake would also work well as a dessert - the choice is yours.
