The Danish are famous for their cakes and pastries, and in Denmark there are bakeries on every street corner. Ask any Dane what their favourite cake is and the majority are sure to say ‘Aeblekage’ or ‘Apple Cake’, which is served up whatever the occasion.

  1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3, and grease and line a 21cm (8in) springform cake tin with baking parchment.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and beat until well combined.
