When my Grandma used to make this cake she would call it ‘fat cake’! Don’t let that stand in the way of you trying this traditional English tea bread - it is deliciously moist and perks up any afternoon cup of tea with a sugary, fruity hit. The recipe just doesn’t work if you substitute butter for the lard, so I’m afraid it’s not suitable for vegetarians. Shame, though all the more for us!
