As you can probably guess from its name, Far Breton originates from Brittany, in Western France; ‘far’ means ‘flour’ and ‘Breton’ ‘of Brittany’. It began its culinary life as a savoury dish - Far Forn - cooked to accompany meat dishes in the 18th century. It was only when a sweet version of the Far Breton evolved in the mid-19th century - which included the highly regarded prunes - that it gained national popularity and became widely known as the French custard tart.
