The history of this marzipan-stuffed fruit cake dates back to the fifteenth century, when the bakers in Germany used to produce huge loaves of Stollen at Christmas. Stollen is a staple of German Christmas markets today - resplendent in wondrous gift wrapping - and makes a delicious alternative to Christmas Cake while keeping the spicy sensibilities enjoyed at this time of the year. Partner it with a glass of brandy.
