We like to make many recipes without a mixer. Why? Because a mixer isn’t 100 percent necessary if you’re up for a little physical labor. If you’re going to mix up a recipe the old-fashioned way, we highly recommend a wide metal bowl (but any material will do just fine). This shape makes it much easier to stir effectively and to scrape down the sides while mixing to ensure a homogeneous batter.
