A visit to your local cake shop will reveal all sorts. I especially like to use heart-shaped doilies on a heart-shaped cake. On the surface of a very flat cake, place a doily or a stencil (make one yourself, maybe the initials of the recipient) and dust with icing sugar or cocoa powder. Very carefully remove the doily or stencil to reveal an intricate pattern.
