This is essential for cutting bread. The serrated blade can stay sharp longer if you remember to lift the loaf off the cutting board when the knife is about to pass through the bottom of the loaf. This avoids crushing the edge of the blade against the board, which would eventually dull it. Serrated knives can’t be sharpened like flat-edged knife blades.
A round wooden board or the same basket you use as a substitute banneton, or even a banneton lined with a clean napkin, are all attractive ways to serve bread at the table.
