Use a flat knife or spoon with a thin, flat handle for this. Have a bowl handy to put your scallops in.
Hold the scallop with the hinge away from you. Insert the knife or the spoon handle into the side of the hinge and angle it upwards. Run the knife tip or spoon handle around the inside of the upper shell, keeping it as close to the shell as possible, until you feel the scallop muscle release. You can then pull the top shell off.
Use a spoon or a knife to scrape the bottom shell and release the skirt and roe and the other side of the muscle.
