It is believed that this bird, well-known to the Greeks and Romans, was introduced from the Gulf of Guinea into Europe by Portuguese sea adventurers around the fifteenth century.
In taste, the guinea fowl has a flavour somewhere between that of the chicken and the pheasant. This bird lives wild in its country of origin, but in Italy and most of the rest of Europe it is mainly raised on farms. Its plumage is typically white spotted with grey, making it one of the most elegant and beautiful of birds.
