Pollution has made this berry difficult to find growing in the wild and there is little interest in hunting out the few that are left, which means that the only blueberries you can get are the larger commercially cultivated ones. These are available all year round but they lack the flavour of the real thing. In the wild, the blueberry grows through the summer into the autumn in the hills and mountains over 1,500 metres (4.500 ft) high. The blue-black berries are very small and a special wooden comb is used to collect them in order to avoid damaging the structure of the plant.
