  • About

On 2 November, Italians celebrate the Day of the Dead. Fave dei morti, which literally translates as ‘broad beans of the dead’, is the name given to the biscuits eaten during the festival in Piedmont, Lombardy and in many other regions.

They are based on a mixture of 250 g (9 oz) finely ground almonds, 2 eggs, 125 g (4½ oz) plain flour, 55 g (2 oz) softened butter, 100 g (3½ oz) sugar and 2 tablespoons good honey, a pinch of salt, 55 g (1¾ oz) coarsely chopped pine nuts, toasted hazelnuts or toasted almonds, a pinch of cinnamon powder and 2 tablespoons grappa. Combine the ingredients thoroughly and make a paste that can be cut into small pieces, each of which will be shaped like a broad bean. Place each ‘bean’ on a buttered baking tray and bake in an oven preheated to 200°C/400°F/gas 6 for 20 minutes. They keep for some time in an airtight jar.
