The province of Vercelli in Piedmont is mainly known for rice cultivation, but where the sunny hills of the Northern part of the region start to build up to the Pre-Alps, there you will find Gattinara, an excellent garnet red wine made with the Nebbiolo grape, the same as used in Barolo. A dry and almost bitter taste characterizes this fine wine, which is excellent with game dishes, especially hare and wild boar.
