Nearly three-fourths of all citrus fruit produced in the world are oranges, whose juiciness and moderate size, sweetness, and acidity make them especially versatile. They’re probably an ancient hybrid between the mandarin and the pummelo, and have in turn been developed into several very different kinds of fruit.
