Very similar to the chile jalapeño in use, but bullet-shaped and slightly smaller. Serranos are probably the fresh hot chile of choice in Oaxaca, and I often recommend them as an alternative to jalapeños in recipes calling for medium-hot to decidedly hot fresh chiles.
