The most fragrant herb of all. I have mentioned (The variety used for pesto, Grande di Genova, in Liguria grown in open ground.

The most perfumed basil is O minimum, a small-leaved species grown in pots, tins, old crocks, in the sun and called Nano verde, ‘green dwarf’, by Italian seedsmen; in Catalonia alfabrega de fulla menuda.

Even in the south, basil is sown in late April, for fear of frost, but one can keep it going right into late autumn, in pots.
