Specifically, a double boiler, usually a stainless-steel bowl nestled over a saucepan of simmering water. In modern kitchens it has also come to mean any stainless-steel crock or container used or usable in a steam table (even when used for storage), as in: “Gimme a bayne fulla potatoes.”
