Although shakers can be divided further, the two main set-ups are the two-piece and the three-piece. The most common two-piece, consisting of two cups, one of which fits inside the other to form a seal, is called a Boston shaker (3). (You can buy tin on glass, or tin on tin, and as above, I’d recommend going for all metal.) A Boston shaker needs a separate strainer (10), while a three-piece, or Cobbler shaker (2) has one in-built. They separate into three pieces: a tin, a lid with the strainer and a cap to cover up the holes while you shake.
