When an acid reacts with an alkali, it creates a salt. When a salt is dissolved in water, it splits into two ions. Table salt, sodium chloride, for example, separates into sodium ions (Na+) and chlorine ions (Cl-). Once free from the tight crystalline structure of solid salt, these electrically charged ions are able to enter into chemical reactions.
