These two vineyards are the oldest in the Savoie, already in existence in Roman times. Medieval texts mention very favorably the wines of Mons Amelioratus, which, of course, became Montmélian. A book on Montmélian and its wine history would cover many pages and never stop being interesting. Montmélian and the neighboring little town of Arbin formed a complex that, at the time, defended the entrance to the Savoie from the French Dauphiné. In the early 1600s, 1500 souls lived in both communities with forty-five pubs ready to sell them wine.
