Napkins

Ever been on a cruise? The staff are trained to shape your towels into animals such as dolphins, cranes and monkeys, which they leave on your bed. When I talk about the language of napkins, I’m not exhorting you to learn some form of textile origami, this is clearly for the host who has time on their hands, but it is worthwhile thinking how best to place a napkin on the table. Traditionally the napkin goes on the left, to the side of the last fork. You can also use a napkin ring. Other placements include a fan shape, concertina style, in the middle, or sprouting out of a glass.
