Hoisin sauce is a sweet, piquant paste made from fermented soybean paste, red beans, Chinese five-spice powder, vinegar, garlic, sugar and chili. It is used for stir-frying and marinades, and combined with onions, garlic, chilies, vinegar and crushed peanuts to make a very tasty dipping sauce for dumplings.
