Leaves from the perilla plant, sometimes also referred to as the beefsteak plant, related to the mint family and Japanese in origin. The leaves can be either green or red and are small, delicate and aromatic. They are used to flavour salads, rice and sashimi. Available at Japanese food stores (usually sold in small bunches).
