Semillon made in Australia has come to be regarded as a first-rate wine, and our vintners are claiming recognition for establishing points of difference from the same varieties grown elsewhere. According to the 1996 Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Journal, ‘Semillon is vying for a position as an “Australian” style. In just the same way that Australia has embraced Shiraz as its own, it is now realising that Semillon could also be adopted as a national icon, distinguishing Australian wines from the multiple contenders on the world market.’ The article goes on to say that semillon wine has been given a raw deal in the past, often being used as a stock wine for white burgundy and incorrectly labelled as ‘Hunter riesling’.
