Bereich, official term for a winegrowing district defined by the 1971 german wine law. In some regions such as baden the Bereich names corresponded largely with already familiar designations for well-defined subregions. In other instances, they were (like the notorious grosslagen) simply invented for the occasion. Prominent labelling with Bereich names was common for cheaper German wines during the 1970s and 1980s but has largely disappeared.
