Austrian red wine grape variety and, like the much more common zweigelt, a cross made in the 1920s by Dr Zweigelt at klosterneuburg, in this case of Portugieser and Blaufränkisch. Plantings had reached 1,000 ha/2,470 acres by 2009, the majority planted in Lower Austria, where it produces relatively undistinguished light reds although its deep colour makes it a useful ingredient in blends. There is also a little in Hungary and Germany.
