Caladoc, reliable dark-skinned cross of Grenache and Côt (Malbec) created in 1958 by French ampelographer Paul Truel to produce a Grenache-like variety less prone to coulure. It is not allowed into any appellation contrôlée wine, although it is used to add tannin and aroma to some southern French reds. France grew a total of almost 3,000 ha/7,410 acres by 2012 and there were more than 1,000 ha in Portugal, mainly in Lisboa, by 2009. It is also grown in Spain, Lebanon, Morocco, and Argentina.
