Côte Rôtie, one of the most exciting, if geographically extremely limited, red wine appellations in France, in the far north of the northern Rhône (see map under rhône). In the 1970s, the area and its wines were somewhat moribund, a rather isolated outpost well north of Tain, where the major négociants and the famous hermitage vineyard are situated. One man, Marcel guigal, is chiefly responsible for the renaissance of this zone (helped by the adulation of another, the American wine critic Robertparker).
