Eisenberg, tiny wine village in Austria’s burgenland adjacent to and named for a high hill dominated by iron-rich schist—its twin over the Hungarian border Vaskereztes sharing the same etymology. Since 2008 it has lent its name to an official dac for blaufränkisch wines grown throughout südburgenland. The klassik wines of Eisenberg DAC must reach 12% alcohol and may not be approved or sold until 1 June and 1 September respectively of the year after their vintage. Wines of this DAC labelled Reserve must be raised in cask or small barrels; reach 13% alcohol; and cannot be approved or marketed before 1 January and 1 March of the second calendar year following their harvest.
