Esgana Cão, synonyms for the Portuguese white grape variety known on the Island of Madeira as sercial. Its full name on the mainland means ‘dog strangler’, presumably a reference to its notably high acidity. It can, occasionally, be found as an ingredient in vinho verde and bucelas.
