Portugal’s most planted white wine grape, grown throughout central, southern portugal. Adaptable, it is not only productive, it also manages to make distinctively scented, reasonably crisp wines. Known in bairrada as Maria Gomes, Fernão Pires was still planted on a total of 13,409 ha/33,120 acres of Portugal in 2012 and to a very limited extent in South Africa, Australia, and California.
